
THE NSC DECIDED TO KILL NURBOL ONERKHAN

On 4 May 2021, Nurbol ONERKHAN, a civil activist from Birlik village (North Kazakhstan region), had his restriction of liberty illegally replaced with imprisonment (for 6 months and 2 days) for allegedly violating probation conditions — for being involved in human rights advocacy and raising legal awareness among citizens.

On 2 November 2020, in Petropavlovsk, a court verdict under Article 405 part 2 of the Criminal Code («participation» in the DCK) was announced. The court issued a politically motivated verdict in the form of 1 year of imprisonment, with placement on probation, a ban on social and political activities, a ban on the use of social networks for 2 years and 100 hours of community service, as well as forced payment to the “Crime Victim Compensation Fund” in the amount of 27,780 tg (~$65) and 840.50 tenge as court fees.

Nurbol ONERKHAN is a participant of peaceful pickets, challenges and video actions.
Nurbol ONERKHAN has a heart condition and his health and life are in danger.

We call for the immediate release of Nurbol ONERKHAN.
We call on the US, the EU, the UK and Canada to impose personal sanctions on: Karim MASSIMOV, head of the NSC; Gizat NURDAULETOV, General Prosecutor; and Yerlan TURGUMBAYEV, Minister of Internal Affairs.
