On April 30, 2021 there will be a politically motivated trial against civil activist Serik ZHAKHIN.

On 30 April 2021, at 11:00, an online trial on the politically motivated criminal case under Article 405 Part 1 and Part 2 («organization and participation in an extremist organization») against the civil activist Serik ZHAKHIN from the city of Astana will be held.

Serik ZHAKHIN is being prosecuted for:

  • Participating and calling for peaceful protests;
  • Administering a Telegram Chat in which Astana activists were members;
  • Participating in discussions on the need to organise public gatherings through social networks to print leaflets in order to increase political literacy of citizens and the importance of solidarity.

In its resolution on the human rights situation in Kazakhstan dated 11 February 2021, the European Parliament called on the Kazakhstani authorities to end all politically motivated prosecutions and immediately and unconditionally release all political prisoners.

The European Parliament condemned the abuse of anti-extremism legislation by the Kazakhstani authorities in order to persecute supporters of the peaceful opposition movements “DСK” and “Koshe Partiyasy”.

We demand an end to political persecution and the release of all political prisoners.
